Did you know that there's such a hidden paradise called Plataran Menteng?? I had no idea why haven't I ever visited this place despite the place having been opened for 2 years. I felt like missing out! When you see its exterior, you wouldn't imagine that the place would be this spacious. It's a house that's gotten major interior makeover. 3 stories. Let's take a tour!

KAUM RESTAURANT JAKARTA
So we finally got the chance to try this hits Indonesian restaurant that we've been seeing around social medias, it's KAUM everybody! Actually we're not really someone who'd search for Indonesian food when it comes to high end places. We're more like 'Indonesian foods are best when it's traditionally made' kind of people, so if we're looking for a good Indonesian comfort food, we'd usually just go to a small shop or even those small stands!

TUGU KUNSTKRING PALEIS RESTAURANT MENTENG JAKARTA
Tugu Kunstring here is a restaurant, hotel, art gallery, and bar, all made into one! Located at Menteng area on a hook of the road. It's been here for 2-3 years and is just simply gorgeous! The interior just screams royalty and a pretty detailed one at that! From the same group as Tugu hotel in Malang, Lombok, Bali, and Blitar, which also includes Lara Djonggrang, Dapur Babah, Shanghai Blue. Fyi, if you want to just go sight seeing without dining in, it's fine too, so don't be shy!

1945 RESTAURANT NEW MENUS
Hello August!! Another great month for Lulabyspoon because it's the special month of our awesome photograper!! It's also a special month for Indonesia, which is why we decided to open this month's post with something very Indonesian! Even the name says it all, 1945! Yes, I know it's not a new restaurant but they're offering some new menus to celebrate our National Independence Day!

SOULFOOD KEMANG
Just realized that we don't do review about Indonesian foods that often. Guess the last time was Fairmont's 1945 and Tambak Bayan, which are probably the only Indonesian restaurants we've ever talked about in this blog. This doesn't mean we dislike Indonesian cuisine though, it's just that we rarely ate out for Indonesian, seeing as we usually have that at home, plus we usually ate Indonesian food at a street food spot rather than proper restaurants. This relatively new Indonesian restaurant in Kemang however is pretty decent and it's called Soulfood! Even when this place is made to be a proper restaurant, they didn't want to lose that traditional kick, so they designed the place as humble as they can be with all the bricks, traditional plates, and let's forget that they also inhabited the environment friendly policy!
Located next to Monstore's old Kemang store, it used to be an Alfamart. Not really hard to find as long as you got a GPS on you! It's a 2 story building and this below is their 1st floor. Pretty low lighted for me, there's also huge window that lets you peek into a small part of the kitchen!
Too bad you can't choose these side dishes individually! It's all part of Kembulan platter, so you gotta get that to have these!
The interior is, like I said before, very humble! Everything's really simple and made to look like a proper version of a street food stall. They really want to show that Indonesian food can be proper and still be traditional!
Just wanna show you how cute their menu 'book' is!!
If you saw that #happyfoodrevolution writing on the first photo of this post, here's what it means. Yes, it's not just a random hashtag but there's an actual story behind it! Soulfood is created by a person named Nanduto, which is of course a pen-name, her real name is Ananda. Nanduto here is the mastermind and cook of these products below; Cassava Chips, Nachos, Chili, and many more! Why is it said that Soulfood is created by her? Well, it's because all the foods here in Soulfood uses Nanduto's product as their main ingredients!
For example, the chili she made can be used for the spaghetti or fried rice for Soulfood, which is why it's called food revolution! Get it now? What their trying to say is that even simple ingredients can be made into various decent dishes, so if you like the foods at Soulfood, you can try buying Nanduto's product and making the foods yourself at home! :D
See the "Telah Dipesan" sign below? It means 'reserved', so when they first opened, you can reserve a table here but since Indonesian has a problem with punctuality and is always late for the reservation, they decided to erase their reservation service, yet they still kept this sign on display and it's becoming a popular photo props for customers here. Now this sign could mean 3 things;
1. Reserved.
2. People that took picture with this sign, means they're taken..lol!
3. A thank you from Soulfood for ordering their foods.
Didn't expect such simple words could mean so deep! Cool, huh?
A complimentary, sort of like a fine-dining's welcoming bread! Made out of sticky rice (totally thought it was some kind of fried beancurd..my bad! :p), comes with a chili dipping sauce. May I warn you that the chili is super spicy!!
RACIKAN BISTIK LIDAH IDR 45K
Okay, I admit that it looks super ordinary but turns out to be SUPER YUMMY! The 'lidah' or tongue is super tender and what makes it different is the peanut sauce. Trust me when I say that this is beyond amazing! You gotta try it and the blanched fresh veggies and chips are a nice company as well!
TULANG JAMBAL IDR 25K
Super lucky to be able to have this, since it's said that this is one of their popular menu, so usually it would've been sold out! Usually 'jambal' is made out of salted fish and this one is made with their secret spices, which is incredibly delicious by the way! They weren't kidding with the food revolution thing! Inside this is 2 pieces of tulang jambal that you can chew on for it still got pieces of delicious fish meat on!
KEMBULAN LUNCH PLATTER IDR 175K
Nasi gurih iga, ayam merah, ikan sambal matah, tumis kecipir jagung, telur kembung, acar nanas kecombrang, sambel apel & krupuk barak.
Soulfood's mandatory menu!!! Another one of those usually sold out choices and again, we're fortunate enough to get the chance to have it while they're still full! They open at 10:30 am and because we didn't want to miss anything, we came right at 11 am! xD
This is actually a serving for 2, so don't be surprised from the huge portion! For me personally, I don't even think that 2 people will be able to finish this, since it's just really huge but we did finish it..can't help the fact that it's just way too good! I especially love their different types of fragrant and flavorful rice! Not only their rice but everything here has very strong flavors but because it's that good, I don't even mind the clashing of strong flavors!
This black colored rice is their delicious squid black rice that you have got to try!
I thought at first that this is gonna be a bit hard to chew like the ones I usually encountered but my, am I wrong! On the contrary, it turns out to be very tender!!
AGLIO OLIO PEDA IJO IDR 45K
Waited a very long time for this to be served, don't really know if it's because they forgot or it really does take that long to cook..hmm. Good thing it's worth the wait! So peda is a type of fish and I guess by ijo, which is green, means pesto? All I know that like most things here, this is very flavorful and totally generous with the topping!
NASI GORENG TOPPING IDR 40K
Served with telur kembung, acar nanas kecombrang & krupuk barak.
Lured in by the name and enraptured by the taste! The rice's consistency is not how usual fried rice is like but leaning more to the Hoka-Hoka Bento's rice. Again, their flavoring is super bold and strong, so the already flavorful rice meeting the also flavorful shredded jerky! For the flavor, you can choose either Peda Ijo or Jambal Merah and toppings, Abon Bilis Honje, Abon Jambal Jogya, or Empal Suwir Sambal Sereh. Our choices here are Peda Ijo and Empal Suwir Sambal Sereh, so be careful 'cause it's a bit spicy!
The egg is just a normal egg but with their special cooking technique, they're able to make it swell up hence the name, telur kembung!
ASEM-ASEM IGA KEDONDONG IDR 95K
Here's their new menu that is seriously wonderful! Tender meat in a spicy and sour soup with beautiful nasi liwet..Perfect! Fyi, their actual plating is with a stacking food containers, which is really traditional yet unique!
KEMBULAN MANIS-MANIS IDR 90K
Kue Mangkok, Balapis, Klepon, Putu Mayang, and many more! All of the desserts they have is gathered into this platter. Well, all except the Rujak Honje that is but other than that, the usual traditional Indonesian dessert that you'd find at a traditional market would be here. Still impressed by the fact that they support our traditional cuisine and could even take it to the next level, even in their taste! I especially love the Piscok, which is chocolate banana fritters, always been my favorite!
Now let's check out their 2nd floor, shall we? Here they wanted to have a different concept, whereas on this 2nd floor, they tried to create a feeling as if we're eating at a friend's house. Each of your orders will be cooked live here..too bad it's not applied yet, so for the time being, your orders will still be cooked on the 1st floor! :(
Oh! And another thing, 2nd floor here is the smoking room, so it's a non-smoking area for the 1st floor due to the fact that their customers consisted of people from all ages. Meaning there'll be kids and elders, so smokes will be bad!
Conclusion is WE ARE SO COMING BACK HERE! Why?! Of course it's because of how yummy their foods are, an incredible food revolution! What I will order again are the squid black rice and Racikan Bistik Lidah. True to their name, their foods really does feeds the soul, since you'll leave feeling happier, at least that's what I feel! Really respect the fact that they're able to attract younger people to want to eat Indonesian cuisines and just in a few months, they've already captured so many people's hearts! Another big news is that they will open another branch at Senopati, so stay tuned!

1945 RESTAURANT FAIRMONT HOTEL
Ready for some luxurious lunch? Since it's a special occasion, which is our beloved Indonesia's Independence day, we got a chance to celebrate it in, of course, an Indonesian restaurant but not just anywhere, it's 1945 at Fairmont hotel! So psyched to be able to celebrate in a restaurant with a name that resembles our Independence day as well! :D
Guess you could say that this place is build as appreciation to our country, since the whole place is even decorated with the red and white of Indonesia!
Who would've guessed that red chili can turn into a pretty bouquet for decorations? Lol! It's pretty and you can get the feeling of Indonesia!
Cotton flower, my recent favorite flower! Don't know why, but I'm just obsessed with it! I used to love roses but ever since I saw a cotton flower, it became my number one flower that I'll look for! Here they used cotton flower AND white roses, I'm pleased! :p
Though they adapted Indonesian theme, it's not traditional and old like how we pictured it, instead it's super classy and modern! You'll definitely be left in awe!
There's only one thing that I find weird though. This sliding door, which made it looked like a Japanese restaurant. They must've have a reason behind this but I just don't know why!
After being seated, the server will put a single petal of rose in front of you as a sign that the seat is taken!
So let the tasting begin!
FRUITY LIME GRANITA - MULBERRY IDR 80K
Home made syrup topped with icy lime granita.
Love the pretty presentation and how the color really suited the Indonesian theme! The shaved ice was very smooth and it's lime flavored! Say goodbye to a boring ice! There're 4 choices of flavors that you can choose for this granita; tamarind, lychee, passion fruit, and this, go wild!
TELENG PUNCH
Drink made out of a teleng flower and soda water! Trust me, it's also the first time I heard the name..lol! After a little bit of a lazy research, I found that the flower is also blue colored, just like this drink. The sad truth is that to me, this drink is the least appealing with it's simple appearance and taste, though it's the most unique. The taste is a bit killed by the soda water, so you can only taste sweet with a hint of flowery aroma!
The server here all worn Indonesia's traditional clothing AKA Kebaya! Who ever said that Kebaya is not pretty must be out of their minds! I find the server here very beautiful with Kebaya!
Crackers anyone? A mandatory snack for Indonesian cuisine!
SATE - CHICKEN OYSTER IDR 100K
Grilled seasoned meat on bamboo skewers.
Did you know that chicken oyster is the best part of the chicken meat?! It's located on either side of a chicken's backbone and known for it's tenderness! Other than the fact that this is a fine-dining cuisine, I now understand why they boldly priced chicken skewers IDR 100K! Probably the best chicken skewers I've ever had, especially when combined with their extraordinary peanut sauce!
PRAWN FRITTERS IDR 70K
TRICOLOUR YAM FRIES IDR 70K
REMPEYEK CRACKERS IDR 50K
My favorite would be the purple yam fries, since it's so freakin' soft! Second to that would be the fritters but the best is still the peanut sauce. You gotta try their super smooth peanut sauce! It's like anything would be perfect to dip into it! Fyi, I don't know about the portioning, since this was just a food tasting and all the sides were combined to one plate, so normally the portion is smaller.
SATE - LAMB TENDERLOIN IDR 150K
Grilled seasoned meat on bamboo skewers.
Another skewer, they have 3 choices of skewers you see. The other one is wagyu beef, sounds interesting but it turns out, the beef was no match to the lamb and chicken, cause the beef was a bit to hard for me. Comparing the beef with this tender lamb, of course I'd choose the lamb! Still, the best was the chicken!
A close up look on today's highlight...peanut sauce! :D
FOIE GRAS DUCK TIMLO IDR 140K
Spring rolls served in duck broth with vermicelli, poached duck egg, pan seared duck breast and foie gras.
This is my first time liking foie gras! Usually it has this sandy texture that I don't really know how to explain but this one's totally smooth! It's like it's made out of beancurd! They need to improve the consistency of the egg though, cause mine wasn't a perfect creamy yolk, while the others had it! :(
The duck broth was another plus point, though be warned to not put too much, cause it's really salty!
When it comes to Indonesian foods, fried rice is a mandatory dish! Here, they have 3 varieties of fried rice; lobster, wagyu and kampung. We got to try the wagyu and kampung, which are both delicious in their own way!
Kampung style Indonesian traditional fried rice with egg and chicken oysters.
NASI GORENG WAGYU IDR 160K
Fried rice made with black-and-white rice, tender wagyu, infused with terasi shrimp paste.
Next up is some proteins! Yeap, it's time for meats! Let me just tell ya that from the duck, chicken to wagyu, it's all so tender and flavorful! Totally love all of it, it's just left to your preference! Now I'll shut up and just let you enjoy the awesome foods!
Crispy fried duck confit with Asian greens and sweet galangal dressing.
RUJAK CHICKEN IDR 280K
Boneless baby chicken with a side of baby spinach and watercress dressed in spicy rujak sauce.
STEAK 1945
Tender dry aged (45 days) wagyu steak grilled with 1945 kecap base barbecue sauce, with choice of:
MARBLING 46 IDR 680K
MARBLING 78 IDR 800K
Some of the more traditional and more Indonesian!
Richly flavorful wagyu sous vide cooked in coconut milk base rendang paste spicy.
TONGSENG LAMB CHOP IDR 320K
Sous vide lamb chop that is deep fried and served over stir fried vegetables in tongseng sauce.
TAPE CHEESECAKE IDR 80K
Creamy smooth cheesecake infused with the distinctive sweet-sour flavor of fermented tape, served with vanilla bean sauce.
Okay, you've heard of cheesecakes but can you imagine a cheesecake combined with Indonesia's tape? For those who don't know, tape tasted like a sweet rice wine or so I think. :p Well, I personally already like tape in the first place and I do think this is sort of weird but I don't hate it! It's just different and the vanilla sauce definitely helped quite a lot!
FROZEN SRIKAYA SOUFFLÉ IDR 80K
A decadent cream soufflé wrapped around a frozen srikaya center, served with pandan-flavored glutinous rice.
I love souffle and I love srikaya, so having them combined into 1 is like a dream! Out of the 3 desserts we had, this is definitely my favorite! Not really interested with the pandan glutinous rice, all I need is the srikaya souffle and I'm all good! :D
NASTAR CAKE IDR 80K
Golden pineapple sponge cake topped with crisp butter crumble.
This really tasted like an actual nastar, minus the crispy cookie crust, which I think is not a really good idea. The beauty of nastar is the crispy cookie crust, at least that's how it is to me! Not saying it tasted bad, just not what I prefer!
Now you know where to take your special guest that likes Indonesian cuisine but you want to take them to a fancier place! Although I personally think the beauty of Indonesian cuisine is the fact that they're very affordable and doesn't require you to dress up..lol! Yet I do appreciate how the took Indonesian cuisine into a higher level, showing that Indonesian cuisine can also be fancy! Fyi, their grand opening will be on 1st October 2015, so be sure to anticipate it!
