SUSHI NAMA BAYWALK

Yes, it's another one at Baywalk Mall and this time we're going back to our beloved Japanese cuisine, it's Sushi Nama by Sushi Masa! Yes, it's by Sushi Masa and it's like the more affordable version of Sushi Masa..lol! Though it's cheaper, I think the quality is still as good, yet what's bad is their service! Well, we came here in in the beginning of their opening and they're instantly overflowing with customers, so I guess they're a bit shocked and unprepared. Maybe now's better?

Sorry but there'll be no interior photos today! It's pretty plain anyway and the space between each table is pretty close. Their exact location is actually next to Coffee Kulture, which means it at that garden spot!

I think Sushi Nama here is more of a snacking place, since if you're looking for their mains, it won't become as affordable. Why it's a snack is because for a portion of their sushi will cost IDR 30K or something!

SALMON CHEESE FURAI IDR 35K
Fried salmon with cheese.

So good!! Well, it's salmon and cheese, what not to like? 1 problem though, where's the cheese? Lol! Can't really taste it and I also don't like the dipping sauce because it kinda taste like meds..wonder what it is. The plus point is because even if it's fried, it's not oily at all!

CHICKEN KARAAGE IDR 30K
Fried chicken.

Nothing special about this and with it having 3 pieces in a plate would make this cost IDR 10K per piece..hmm, I totally expected something more!

SALMON ABURI SUSHI (2PCS) IDR 15K
Half broiled salmon.

See! Isn't it affordable? Only IDR 15K for 2 pieces of delicious salmon aburi, so it's IDR 7,5K per piece! Like most salmon aburi, this taste amazing! It's totally a must have item when you go to a Japanese restaurant. It's also seasoned well that you won't think of using soy sauce for it!

EBI TEMPURA MAKI IDR 35K
Cooked prawn tempura.

This is also good but very standard, like you can already guess how it'll taste like, am I right? It's just tempura wrapped in sushi rice but still, it tastes okay and a yummy crispy snack!

SALMON MAKI IDR 35K
This is also pretty standard but who doesn't love a good ol' salmon maki? Especially since the quality of the salmon is great, I think it's even better than Tei's! Like you can taste the freshness in your mouth! Fyi, this is IDR 35K for 6 pieces, ain't it reasonable?

SALMON HANA ROLL IDR 35K
It's a given that this will taste superb! Just look at how appetizing it looked! Those torched mayo is what makes it so interesting and tastes amazing! Yum!

SALMON BELLY ABURI CHEESE IDR 30K
Half broiled salmon belly with cheese.

Though it tastes delicious, it has the same problem as the others that has cheese in it. You can't taste the cheese..lol! It's really too bad cause I bet it'll taste even better if you can taste the cheese!

UNAGI SUSHI IDR 35K
No matter how predictable this is, it still will taste amazing! I mean, it's unagi for crying out loud! Can't really complain here, especially since the unagi is really well-seasoned!

MIX CARPACCIO IDR 35K
Salmon carpaccio.

Does this have 2 kinds of fish in it? I know 1 of it is salmon but is the other one another part of salmon or is it an entirely different fish? Well, all I know is that I don't really like the texture of that other one. If it's the salmon then there's nothing wrong with it at all! What makes this taste so good is the sauce, it's a taste that I've never encountered before! Not even in Sushi Sen!

The thing about this place is that most of their dish is pretty predictable but because it tastes amazing then I'm totally okay with predictable..lol! Well, I guess most sushi will taste predictable, what matters is their freshness and quality and Sushi Nama definitely pass with flying colors!

COFFEE KULTURE BAYWALK

Wondering how Jakarta's coffee game doing? Well, I believe that it's still going strong cause here's another new coffee shop. It's not exactly a new one but it's a new branch of Coffee Kulture! For those who doesn't know, their first branch is at Muara Karang and now, their 2nd branch is at the mall nearby, Baywalk!

If I were to choose, I'd definitely pick this new branch, since they totally improved their look which you can clearly see from the interior! It's more of a nowaday's type of interior with all the earthy components and color and not forgetting the all around glass for those natural lights..lol!

CHEESEBURGER ROLLS IDR 65K
Do you know what cheeseburgers taste like? Well, this literally tastes like cheeseburger in a shape of crispy rolls! A very satisfying snack to accompany you and friends because who doesn't love a good cheeseburger? :p

SALMON TREASURE MEATBALLS IDR 88K
Don't really know why it's called treasure, might be because it's yummy! Can never resist foods that are so deliciously glazed! Though I can't really taste the salmon, it still taste hell'a good! Love how convenient that stick is, so that you don't have to use any utensils nor dirty your fingers!

PULLED PORK HASH SLIDERS IDR 59K
It's pork, so expect nothing less! This here is a combination of everything that I love, from pork, hash brown, to cheese..yeap, nothing to complain here!

TRUFFLE PARMESAN FRENCH FRIES IDR 45K
The smell of truffle here is unbelievable! No kidding! Though it needs more parmesan, since you can barely taste it with all the overwhelming truffle. Not really much could go wrong with fries as long as you season it well!

AVOCADO COFFEE CRUNCH IDR 50K
Avocado, chocolate ice cream, milo, crispy balls, espresso.

I think this is a hands-down most favorite item today! From the looks to the taste, it scores an almost perfect score! It would be perfect if they make the avocado a bit thicker but I guess it's made this watery because it intends to be a beverage rather than a dessert. I do hope they would make it thicker!

Love how well balanced the whole taste is! Not too sweet, not too bitter and a combination of avocado, chocolate, and coffee. Perfect!

VALRHONA PICCOLO MOCHA IDR 40K
Valrhona chocolate, espresso, milk.

Though I didn't taste this because it was not mine, it definitely piques my interest! Just hearing the word Valrhona always drags me in and seeing as it's a mocha made it all the worst! I'd definitely try it on my next visit!

BAOZY SMORES IDR 55K
Over the top shakes with mini nutella fried baoger, milk, marshmallow, 54% dark chocolate, oreo, biscuit.

From the looks of it, you can clearly tell how much guilt is inside this..lol! This guilty pleasure consists of chocolate, whip cream, marshmallow and wafers, so just imagine the calories but it's just so sinful that you won't be able to resist! The name baozy definitely came from the burger buns on top that is also enjoyable if you eat it while dipping it into the drink!

BAOZY PB FLAKES IDR 55K
Over the top shakes with crunchy peanut butter, cornflakes, vanilla, milk, marshmallow.

Same thing as the Baozy Smores only with peanut butter and cornflakes this time! If you're less of a sweet-tooth then this is a perfect alternative! I personally think the bun here is better though, since it's filled with peanut butter! Dayum!

Now that we're done with the interesting drinks, it's time to dig into the mains. There're some that I didn't have the chance to try but it's pretty much their recommended dishes, so let's check them out!

THE ULTIMATE IDR 69K
100gr real beef patty, caramelized onion, crispy bacon (beef/bacon), french fries.

TRUFFLE PASTA IDR 79K
Bacon, mushrooms, pasta, cream, truffle oil, parmesan, microgreens.

SAMBAL MATAH PASTA WITH SALMON BELLY IDR 89K
Pan-fried Norway salmon belly, housemade sambal matah sauce, pasta, microgreens.

Okay, you might think I'm weird for choosing a pasta with sambal matah but I love sambal matah and let me just tell you that this is amazing! Who knew sambal matah would go that well with salmon, let alone pasta! Thumbs up for Indonesia's chili!

SALTED EGG YOLK CHICKEN OVER RICE IDR 65K
Fried chicken thigh, housemade salted egg yolk sauce, crispy sunny side up, rice, microgreens.

Salted egg yolk this, salted egg yolk that, it's been all about salted egg yolks nowadays and you gotta keep up with the trend, right? Well, it's no wonder that it's becoming a trend, since it's really good and goes well with almost anything! This bowl of goodness is a great choice if you wanna get some Asian foods!

HERB CRUSTED SALMON WITH LEMON CREAM SAUCE IDR 159K
150gr Norway salmon, parmesan & parsley crust, potato wedges, lemon cream sauce, microgreens.

The herb definitely smells great and salmon always goes well with lemon, so there's nothing wrong with this. Another plus point because they managed to get the skin crusted but the inside of the salmon still raw red and for me who prefers raw salmon, it's good news!

CARAMELIZED GINGER SALMON WITH AVOCADO SALSA IDR 159K
150gr marinated caramel & ginger Norway salmon, avocado salsa, potato wedges, microgreens.

Yes, you all know how I love glazed foods, so I would prefer this if only the inside is as raw as the one before. Too bad it wasn't though, I'm starting to think that what they did before was just pure luck. Overlooking that, the caramelized ginger actually suits salmon and even if I'm not a big fan of avocado as a savory choice, this is actually tolerable!

Wonder how vast and long will this coffee trend last in Jakarta? We hope it will last long with more and more talented barista appearing and more proper coffee shops! Who's with us?

SUKIYA GYUDON JAKARTA

Sukiya has finally made it to Jakarta and it's in Baywalk Mall! Hooray!

Almost every Saturday, me and some blogger friends went out in search of yummy foods, either it's an invitation or just looking for some new restaurants. This time we choose here cause Sukiya is a popular Japanese Gyudon chain restaurant in Japan. The concept of the place is kinda similar to other Japanese restaurant like Yoshinoya, so you choose a table, order and pay at the counter then your number will be called and you have to take your food from the counter. Easy!

Sukiya was unbelievably crowded that day! Either because the food is actually very nice or because Baywalk itself was crowded cause of the Korean event or something, even the owner, who is really Japanese, also helped in cleaning tables and sort. The place is totally FULL! Nevertheless, that didn't stop us from doing what we usually do, take pictures of the foods, which also made us the center of attention (whoops?). Satisfied with our pictures, we started to dig in and a few minutes after that, something TERRIBLE happened!

Since there're no more space on the table for our bags cause it was full with foods, we had to put our bags either on our lap or on the floor and the space between tables're really close, which made it easy for thievery and my fellow foodie, Verdi (The Hungry Doctor), whose camera bag was on the floor, got his whole camera bag stolen! While we were searching for it in panic, a witness said that he saw some guy beside our table took it, the witness thought it was his own. In the end, we didn't manage to find the person who stole it, so this is a lesson to be learnt for everyone! Be careful!

So I apologize  for not taking any interior picture, it was a really hectic situation.
Okay, chow time!

GYUDON (BEEF BOWL) IDR 26,3K (R) / 32,7K (L)
This is the most standard dish here, typical rice bowl with slices of beef and onion. Tender and juicy beef with the perfect texture of a Japanese rice, so it's a bit sticky and chewy. Love how the beef is well seasoned and slightly smoked. Portion wise, I think regular is more than enough for me, but large might be a bit more suitable for guys. Fyi, this is the basic of all the beef bowl here, so the other menus are just an additional to this.

BEEF CROQUETTE IDR 7,2K
I know it said BEEF croquette and I don't know if there's something wrong with my taste buds but I didn't taste any beef in it, should probably add more beef. Everything else is okay though, tasty with good crispy texture! Fyi, if you add IDR 10K to all the Ã  la carte menu, you'll get 2 Beef Croquettes, Miso Soup and Drink; Ocha (Japanese green tea), Pepsi, Strawberry Mirinda, 7up or Mineral Water.

HALF BOILED EGG IDR 4,5K
There are also other side dishes like this half boiled egg that you can order separately. Here, they make perfect half boiled eggs, if you like creamy egg yolks, then this will amaze you!

HALF BOILED EGG BEEF BOWL IDR 30,9K (R) / 37,2K (L)
Like I said, this menu is just the basic beef bowl with an additional half boiled egg. Whether you choose to order the beef bowl and egg separately or not, it doesn't matter and the price is still the same, so you don't have to worry. I recommend adding half boiled egg to any of your rice bowl dish cause it just gives you a nice creamy texture when you mix it up. Yum!

You can also add chili powder for spiciness. Anyway, look at those perfect egg yolk!

CHICKEN CURRY W/ BEEF IDR 40,9K (R) / 47,2K (L)
All the curry here is chicken and this is practically the same beef bowl with less beef and additional chicken curry. Just imagine that delicious beef bowl then ADD rich curry into it! Perfect for those who wants a creamy texture but doesn't like egg yolks!

CHICKEN KARAAGE IDR 13,6K
Nothing really special about it, tasted a bit burnt which is still okay, just wished it was more juicy, but at least it's not under seasoned, so that's good! There's also a chicken karaage set for every Ã  la carte with just IDR 16,3K, you'll get additional Chicken Karaage, Miso Soup and Drink; Ocha (Japanese green tea), Pepsi, Strawberry Mirinda, 7up or Mineral Water.

MISO SOUP IDR 4,5K
Well seasoned miso with soft Japanese tofu is always good to relieve all those oil from your dish and this one is good!

Even though there's an unexpected incident, doesn't change the fact that the food is enjoyable and I hope that the same doesn't happen to anyone else. I also wish that Sukiya could improve on their security system. Anyway, don't worry cause Verdi has already bought a new camera! Wow!

YAMAGOYA RAMEN

Who said the ramen craze is over?? We were dazed by the existence (and competition) emerging new ramen brands in Jakarta nowadays. Think that there's no more space for the competition? Now opens another international ramen brand in Baywalk Mall: Yamagoya Ramen!

If you noticed, it existed before in Thamrin Nine building and was closed around a year ago. Apparently, there was a change in ownership and now the new owners are bringing back the franchise to Jakarta as the exclusive holder for the right. This place is the first one to open in Jakarta after the closure in Thamrin Nine!

They certainly want to keep the ambiance authentic: not only they write off everything in Japanese kanji that I know nothing about, the waitresses also always murmur something in Japanese (which I don't think they understand either! I'm certain that they memorized the script :p)

There's not much in the interior, since it's taking place in a mall, the space is mostly only this corridor long. On the other side of that glass is the open kitchen where you can freely watch the cooks do their job for you!

Kinda love this ornament since it gives off the feeling of actually going to an authentic ramen shop in Japan (or even better, it actually make me imagine going to a street ramen cart!)

Essential seasonings of Japanese cuisine: chili pepper, sesame seeds, chili oil, and pepper! They didn't have fresh garlic though, but it's okay, not a big fan of it anyway.. On to the taste!

KAKUNI CHA SHU IDR 39k
This side dish is SO heavenly!!! ...wait! I haven't even introduced anything to you and I was too excited in bringing you the news! Sorry for the early spoiler! This is a plate of pork belly cut in thick (yeah!) slices, grilled and marinated in sweet soyu. It's a bit crunchy on the surface, like caramel glazed as a result of grilling with sweet sauce and of course the tender, smooth part of the inside that gives you heaven!

BLACK GARLIC RAMEN IDR 55k
Unique stuff! That's the first thing that came to mind when I was thinking which ramen to order! Since I was a bit uninterested with just the usual stuff, I tried this black one instead! Not sure if they used squid ink or not, but as its name suggests, its strong with garlic aroma and flavor with pork broth as its base. I think it has a very good flavor, but the texture of the noodles were a bit too soft, expecting a bit more chewiness. Delicious, but not extraordinary.

CHA SHU RAMEN IDR 63k

The visual tells you everything: it lives up to its name! Totally abundant of chashu with such a reasonable price, I think this is a winner for chashu ramen lovers as I've never gotten more portion in any other ramen shops. Only complain was that the soup broth was too strong for me. But hey, the owner was there and he told us he'll work on the recipe so let's just give it another chance!

TONKATSU IDR 45k

Now for another classic side dish to the ramen. We were hungry so a simple gyoza wouldn't suffice, so here it is: pork katsu! Served with classic tonkatsu sauce that's similar to Worcestershire. It tastes good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The batter was too thick, maybe it reduces the crunchiness and also resulting to a rather overcooked pork that lost its best tenderness.

Overall verdict? Since the owner told us beforehand that they're "still improving" on the flavor, I guess they weren't at their best form yet. Still, I do think that this place could be promising and expecting a real improvement. They do need to though, to be another potent contender in Jakarta's ramen market!
